The National Minimum Wage was introduced to provide employees with decent minimum standards and fairness in the workplace. From 1st October 2007 the rates are:-
Age 16 - 17 years | £3.40 per hour |
Age 18 - 21 years | £4.60 per hour |
Age 22 or over | £5.52 per hour |
Any changes to the Minimum Wage usually take place in October each year.
If you're working and think that you're not being paid what you're entitled to you can call the National Minimum Wage helpline on 0845 6000 678. You can ask for a free copy of "A Detailed Guide to the National Minimum Wage". You can also visit the employment rights website at www.direct.gov.uk
Apprenticeships are excluded from the National Minimum Wage:
If you are taking part in an apprenticeship, by law your employer does not have to pay the Minimum Wage. You may think this is unfair, but the Government is making allowances for your employer giving you time off to gain qualifications and investing their time in your on-the-job training.
Remember - although you might earn more in a non-apprenticeship job to start off with, in the long term you are likely to earn more money if you have qualifications.
