Health and Disability
The law says that you must tell the employer about
(disclose) your disability if it may cause health and safety issues
for you or others. If there are no health or safety issues you need
to decide on the advantages and disadvantages of telling the
employer .
Advantages
Most employers prefer you to tell them as they can
make any necessary arrangements or adjustments for you. They can
get advice on this and they may be able to get money towards
costs.
By disclosing your disability you may find that you
are able to get extra help and support in the workplace which will
help you settle in and succeed at your job. It also allows the
employer to understand any additional requirements you may have
because of a disability or health condition. If you decide to talk
about your disability or health condition, you can do this in a
positive way.
You can get advice on how to disclose information
from the Disability Employment Advisers at the Job Centre, or from
the Remploy website - click on
www.remploy.co.uk
and search for
"disclosing your disability".
Disadvantages
You may worry that by disclosing a disability or
health condition you will put the employer off. This is not
necessarily the case and there are laws against discriminating
against people with disabilities. To find out more click on
