Criminal Convictions

Applying for work if you've been in trouble with the police

The Rehabiliation of Offenders Act was brought in to help people with criminal convictions get into work. Whether you need to tell the employer about a conviction will depend on:

  • The type of conviction,

  • The length of sentence

  • How long ago the offence happened

Some convictions become "spent" after a period of time and you don't have to tell the employer about them (disclose them to the employer).

You must tell employers if you have been convicted of specific crimes and if you received a custodial sentence of a certain length. Some convictions never become spent and they always have to be disclosed. If you are applying for a job and don't know if you should tell the employer about criminal convictions, you can find out more from your YOT worker if you have one or from the NACRO website www.nacro.org.uk or ring NACRO on 020 7582 6500 020 7582 6500
