Our Experience Of The Project

When I volunteered back in April 2008 to manage the project along with Charlotte I had no idea what to expect, because I had never managed anything before in my life! The only thing I was certain of at the time was that I felt passionately about highlighting to young people the benefits of taking on an Apprenticeship and encouraging those that might be interested to take one on.

My reason for wanting to manage the project was largely due to my own very positive experience of starting an Advanced Apprenticeship in December 2007. It was also because I was aware from my time at sixth form that young people are not always made aware of Apprenticeships and the positive role they can play in their development and transition from school/college into the real working world.

I’ve genuinely enjoyed being a part of this project and I am extremely proud of it.

The skills I have learnt and developed and the challenges I have had to overcome during the past 4 months being joint Project Manager have increased my confidence enormously. It has also made me so much more aware of just how much time and hard work is involved trying to convey what on the surface seems a very simple message. I really liked getting to know some of the other Apprentices better and actually had far more fun than I could have possibly anticipated.

Thank you Malcolm and Sheron for the opportunity!

Having the chance to get involved in a project to potentially help other young people make a decision about their career has been exciting and something I was keen to get involved in from the start.

I was given the opportunity to work in a way which was totally different from my everyday job role and required me to take on extra responsibilities that I wouldn’t usually get chance to do. I never imagined I would ever call myself a project manager!

The main reason I chose to take part and help manage the project was for personal development through gaining extra skills and experiences.

I also wanted to raise awareness about apprenticeships and thought that by talking about my own experience as an apprentice I could inspire other young people to take on an apprenticeship.

As well as managing the running of the project, myself and Anna got involved in planning, thinking up ideas, considering practicalities, decision making, chairing meetings, team working and so on.

I feel these experiences will be a real benefit for the future and apart from benefiting me at work it has helped me to build new friendships in the company.

Thanks to Sheron and Malcolm for coming up with the idea and giving us the opportunity to make it our own.

“I’ve been really impressed with the way the apprentices took ownership of the project and managed themselves and colleagues throughout, as well as producing excellent results. It just shows what talent our apprentices have got!”
